“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.” (Matthew 4:1-2)
Adam was tempted by satan. He disobeyed God and followed the enemy.
Israel was tested by God in the desert – “to know what was in [their] heart, whether [they] would keep his commandments or not” (Deuteronomy 8:2). Like Adam, they disobeyed God and failed the test.
Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit “to be tempted by the devil.” He is the new Adam and the new Israel. And unlike Adam and Israel, he defeated satan and passed God’s test. By doing so, he proved himself to be the Father’s loyal, submissive and obedient Son. He proved himself to be the worthy Messiah.
We are all guilty sinners. Like Adam and Israel, we disobey God and follow our own rebellious ways. To save and set us free, Jesus our Messiah (the One and only) followed the Holy Spirit and defeated satan in the desert. He reversed the curse of Adam’s fall and succeeded where Israel failed. And it’s all for us.
Christ’s victory over satan’s temptation teaches us that he is undoubtedly the Messiah who has come to save and set us free. And all who believe/trust in Jesus have sure and complete salvation – freedom from satan, sin and hell – because of his life, death and resurrection.
Believer in Christ, be assured that you have trusted in the right One – the only One. In him, your salvation is sure and complete.
Non-believer… Stop being unbelieving. Believe. Be saved. Be free. In Christ.
