Monergism: The Reformed Order of Redemption (Ordo Salutis)

“And those He predestined, He also called. And those He called, He also justified. And those He justified, He also glorified.”

– Epistle to the Romans 8:30 *

ἀπολύτρωσις (apolytrōsis) = redemption; release secured by ransom; liberating deliverance.

σωτηρία (sōtēria) = salvation; rescue; deliverance; restoration/wholeness (including healing); preservation.

“Because it has been graciously granted to you on Christ’s behalf… to believe in Him…”
– Philippians 1:29 *

In Reformed biblical–textual–exegetical systematic theology, redemption is monergistic (sola gratia) in its decisive origin and saving efficacy—God’s work from beginning to end.

The monergistic ordo salutis is the Spirit-wrought application of redemption—eternally decreed by the Father (pactum salutis) and accomplished once for all by Jesus Christ through His perfect life, atoning death, and justifying resurrection (historia salutis)—whereby the elect are savingly united to Christ through the Spirit’s irresistible grace and, in that union, receive every further benefit of His redeeming work as likewise Spirit-wrought.

Pactum Salutis (redemption decreed in eternity) → Historia Salutis (redemption accomplished in history; climactically in the first century CE) → Ordo Salutis (redemption applied experientially by the Spirit in the elect).

The Reformed Order of Redemption

(Ordo Salutis)

—The application of redemption

generally–monergistically wrought by the Holy Spirit,

based on the definitive atonement accomplished by Jesus Christ through His life, death, and resurrection (historia salutis),

in fulfillment of God the Father’s eternal decree (pactum salutis).

1. Effectual Calling — monergistic.

2. Regeneration (rebirth from above)— monergistic.

3. Conversion (faith accompanied and evidenced by repentance)—monergistic in source, synergistic in exercise.

4. Justification and Adoption — monergistic.

5. Sanctification  — monergistic in source, synergistic in exercise.

6. Preservation and Perseverance — preservation is monergistic; perseverance is monergistic in source, synergistic in exercise.

7. Glorification — monergistic.

“I am convinced of this: that He who started a good work in you will complete it on the Day of Messiah Jesus.”

– Epistle to the Philippians 1:6 *
