Elderly Chinese person (Cantonese):
Indigenous Taiwanese are Filipinos.
Me:
Yes. And, Filipinos and indigenous Taiwanese are called Austronesians.
Elderly Chinese:
I don’t know about that. But I know that indigenous Taiwanese are Filipinos.
—
I could only smile.
Interesting how an everyday elderly Chinese person views our indigenous Taiwanese siblings.

In the traditional nine-branch classification of the Austronesian language family, eight primary branches remained confined to Taiwan, while the ninth lineage—Malayo-Polynesian—crossed into the Philippines and became ancestral, linguistically, to the enormous Austronesian-speaking world stretching westward to Madagascar, eastward to Rapa Nui, northward to Hawaiʻi, and southward to New Zealand.
